Tomorrow is my mother’s birthday and she would have been 100 years old (she passed at 92). When I think about my parents and their health, it’s almost a different planet that we call home after the last century.
On the positive side, the rate of cigarette smoking has dropped significantly, and exercise is now seen as a good idea for all. There’s a recognition that screening for cancer and heart disease should be routine. Medications and treatments for many illnesses are highly refined and effective.
In the negative direction, stress is high, inactivity is commonplace (addiction to computers and cell phones) and violence is on the rise. We have new substances that kill (Fentanyl and others) and new ways to get in trouble with nicotine (vaping). Although we have more tools at our disposal, there are many new ways to get into trouble. There are other global issues that are starting to intrude in a big way, with climate change being front and center.
Let’s focus on things that are universally good. Staying physically active is key, no matter how you do it. Eating a less processed diet is beneficial for just about everything medical. Getting enough sleep and staying mentally engaged make our brains work better and last longer. Working on being connected with people and things that nourish the soul (like our Breakthrough Karate group) will always be in style.
Thanks to mom and dad for raising me with good principles and giving me the resources to lead a life of quality.
I’m a lucky guy.
Ossu!
