The news is horrifying wherever you look. Whether it’s tragedy in the Middle East, Eastern Europe or dozens of other places, it’s shocking to see the degree of inhumanity that exists. It’s overwhelming to see images of what people are capable of doing.
I turn to the Food Network for relief. If there ever was a platform for peace, it would be the shared experience of eating a good meal. The smell, taste and textures of our favorite dishes trigger the frontal lobes of the brain to remember good times (my grandmother’s kitchen, for one). The shared joy of eating something delicious crosses all boundaries of culture and religion.
There may be no atheists on the battlefield, but we can also find divinity in the dining room.
Let’s pray for peace and compassion in our world. May we find ways to connect with others who are different and enhance our lives with mutual respect and understanding. Maybe one day the UN will have a big round table where all nations sit together and nourish one another.
