Comfort in Rituals

Halloween is around the corner and decorations abound in my neighborhood.  It’s comforting to see both kids and adults show some excitement anticipating a fun holiday.  With rare exception, most everyone finds something that they like on Halloween;  decorating with spooky props, going on the trick-or-treat circuit or just answering the door to hand out candy to cute costumed kids. Like Thanksgiving, it’s a cultural holiday without religious or political overtones.

Something we can all use nowadays.

There’s comfort in rituals which connect us with previous generations.  This is very evident in karate with the bowing and ceremony as we begin and end class.  The key is to present our exercises in a fashion that fits the dojo tradition.  Hope everyone has an opportunity to enjoy the holiday in your own home and share the joy with those who visit your front door.
